This building is a part of Braga´s Renaissance urban development. The archway was renewd in D. Rodrigo´s time (1715), and a new colonnade built. During the jurisdiction of Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança, and due to popular request after hearing powerful evangelical sermons preached from the arcade, a chapel was built dedicated to Our Lady of Lapa (1761-64 and 1768).
