CAPELA DA NOSSA SENHORA DA PRAÇA

Póvoa de Varzim
Description
Baroque chapel built in 1745, with a longitudinal plan, with a single nave and rectangular presbytery.

Its main door is oriented to the southwest, without following the canonical orientation, due to the fact that the chapel was built where there was a niche with the painting of the image of Christ, invoked by Nossa Senhora da Praça.

This place is of particular civic and religious importance, since it is located in the center of the main square of the city, marked by the "House of the Chamber" and facing the street that leads to the Mother Church.

The interior decoration is baroque. The altarpiece of the apse is Rococo and the side walls are lined with blue and white tiles, typical of the 18th century. Two altarpieces on the nave, as well as the high choir and its spiral staircase, were brought from the Church of S. Pedro de Rate during the restoration of 1930/1940.
