Figueira Mills Center

Penafiel
Description
Figueira stands out for its eight mills, which are distributed from the top of the Mozinho until the urban sprawl. The river is known as Ribeiro da Figueira, Ribeiro da Presa or Ribeiro dos Pisões. The last name is probably due to the fact that in the XVI century there were two instruments (Pisões) to press the sackcloth which were located among the residences where Casa do Pisão now stands. The Figueira mills are small buildings with an area between 3.5 and 7.0 m2 for just a single person. These structures are built in local granite, sometimes taking advantage of the granite outcrop as a foundation. The coverage is a shale sadlle roof extending to an eave, with the tiles forming the ridge. The shale was a local ressource from the mountains of Boneca and Valongo in the parishes of Lagares e Capela (mountains of Santo Antoninho e de Lousada).
