Fojo do Lobo de Parada

Montalegre
Description
A monument located at an average altitude of 890 metres inside the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The vegetation is dense, having the pit recently been burnt. It is a granite wall, closed around a large rock, forming an enclosure only accessible from the outside. It has a door, formerly used by people to put the bait, carry out maintenance and cleaning operations, and to enter the interior of the walled area when a wolf was trapped there. With approximately 60 metres in medium diameter, is the largest pit trap of this type in the Iberian Peninsula. One of its structural peculiarities is the quadrangular shape tank dug in the rocky outcrop on which rests the central rock, which had the function of a fountain for the animal, used as bait. The decoy used could also be a live goat, offered by the residents of the parish of Outeiro interested in capturing the wolf.
