Miradouro Costa da Castanheira

Vila Nova de Cerveira
Description

Standing on this gorge, a slope that culminates in the "Penedos da Castanheira" (550m in altitude), one can appreciate the Coura River cutting across the characteristic soils of the parish of Covas. In geological terms, the area is composed of the following masses: Granitic Gneiss or Gandra Gneiss (igneous rocks); Andalusite Schist; Schist-Greywacke Complex; metamorphic derived series and granite veins of Aplite and Pegmatite. In this area there is a zone which intrusions of mineralised and pegmatites dams are abundant. These were explored in the mid-twentieth century, while searching for tin and tungsten, minerals for strategic weapons, which are associated with gold, silver and other acessory minerals, Below the Rocks of "Casinhas" and "Castanheira", the Coura River carves a deep valley with steep slopes covered by brush and pine forests. Near the watercourses is the riparian vegetation that dominates the view. Regarding the fauna one can indicate the presence of several species of birds, especially raptor birds.
