Pillory of Chavães

Tabuaço
Description

This pillory dates back to the 17th century. All elements of this monument have a rustic and simple style. The column of the pillory rests on three nicely shaped square-cut steps. The first step is not very high, since it is buried in the pavement. The other two steps are considerably higher and have even heights.

The square-shaped shaft has a simple style and poorly shaped corners. Hence, it does not have a true octagonal shape. Rising from the top of the shaft, the crown of the pillory is shaped like a short but nicely incorporated prismatic block with chiselled grooves on its four somewhat flat corners. The year 1698 is carved on one of the four sides of this element. A small, short pyramid tops the pillory in the centre and serves as its finish.
