Places of interest – Arcos do Sardão Aqueduct

Vila Nova de Gaia
Description
Aqueduct of private civil architecture was built in 1720 by José Bento Leitão, maternal grandfather of  the writer Almeida Garrett.
It was meant to conduct water from a spring in Vilar de Andorinho to the Quinta do Sardão mansion.
It was conceived as a robust structure constituted by an arcade with twenty-three full arches, of big dimension, settled in many other columns.
It is classified as property of public interest since 1946.
In 1987 the arcade was changed to allow the passage of national road 222.
