Although it has undergone several changes in its original structure over the centuries, the Romanesque Church of Arões is a fine example of Romanesque architecture in Northwest Iberian Peninsula, dating back to the 13th century
The church is the only National Monument in the council, known as the “crown jewel” of local heritage. It consists of a small yet robust temple, with thick walls and scarce lighting. The front of the church is austere and boasts a round arch and the Agnus Dei; on the south side wall, on the door tympanum, it has an interesting Latin inscription with the date of construction. Inside the church, the triumphal arch connecting with the chancel is magnificent, and so are the altarpieces of the side altars of the aisle and the coffered ceiling with religious decorations.
